Apron For Class

Image
Apron   I started classes! Since I was going so slow through everything, I decided to start classes at the local community college to force myself into making things. This begins a series of 3 posts from my first class and first term in the school. Design & Construction All of the design factors were made to test some basic skill we learned in this class. (Did I mention the class was Apparel Construction I?). The edges are simple hem. The straps are cut on the bias (cut at a 45 degree angle to the fabric), this makes them nice and flowy! This also required a bias seam to connect the neck strap to the back strap. Essentially it involves aligning the ends of the two pieces at a 90 degree angle, and sewing across the corner at a 45 degree angle. When you open it up they're a straight line, but the stitch is along the grain so it's stronger. The chest pocket is a forked pocket. It makes 3 segments out of one stitch! The lower pocket was a simple pocket...

Space Shorts

Build Your Own Outfit - Part 2  -  This is article 2 out of 3 of my Build Myself an Outfit series. Only a shirt left! These only took me 5 months to procrastinate my way through, so hopefully I do better next time. Space Shorts!  -  As you might recall from my first post , the idea of space shorts originates from a pair of shorts my mom made me when I was a kid. They were honestly a way cooler fabric than what I have for these, but I just couldn't find something that came close to being as cool. In the future I may have to make it myself.  Original Space Shorts These are real freaking shorts though. I had to learn to do a few things for these specifically, and had to dig back to recall a few more. It is the Burda 6815 Chinos. I'd been warned about Burda sewing patterns and how their instructions are a little lacking, and I found that to be very true when working with it. Honestly, that was the biggest reason these to...

Dressing Myself - Part 1  -  When I conceived this blog, I started thinking about how I wanted to make the first posts. I don't think modeling naked with a sewing machine was originally in the plan. As I said in my intro I wanted there to be no mistake what I'd sewn, so I didn't want outside sourced clothes to make it into the pictures. The obvious question was "what about underwear?" The obvious answer was I had to make it. From there I saw a vision of a photo series of me getting dressed in clothes I made. Start with nothing, followed by underwear, pants, and a shirt. I've split it up, but here's part 1! What It Is  -  I didn't sew them until a couple months ago. I have this grand vision of being able to draft everything I sew and definitely didn't want to spend $20 on a boxers pattern. So I actually made these based on the drafting pattern I use for leggings (post to come). I just gave it a lot more ease*...

It All Starts With A Machine

Time To Start Sewing!  -  You can't get dressed if you've got nothing to wear. The Machine  -  I'd been talking about learning how to sew for a while, but never really got around to it when I was living at home. After moving away I had kind of just forgotten about it, when this guy* popped into my life. It's a Bernina 930, and it's pretty freaking rad. It doesn't serge, but it can do pretty much everything else I need. And even though it's not pictured here, it's great having it be all mechanical switches and knobs for control. It just feels sturdier that way. Hold Up  -  I was stuck right here on this post for a couple weeks, just trying to figure out what to say next. Sitting around stressing about how to say it just right. So I got a suggestion from my main muse to keep it short so this project can be what it's supposed to be: something fun for me to do. So I'll be adjusting to that and only saying what comes...

Space Shorts: An Intro!

Image
Intro  -  Shit guys I started sewing! Actually I started like 2 years ago when I inherited a sewing machine and started taking a classes. I’m not sure exactly where my inspiration to sew came from, but I bet part of it had to do with Project Runway, since I’d watch that a ton growing up and still do. So I guess I finally settled on a creative outlet after lots of dabbling and giving up. Sewing just feels right. I always loved to build and create, and even if what I’m making could also be made by a middle schooler in their home-ec class, it’s still fun, and I can still put my own flair in things. “Why are you making a blog then?” I was making my fourth project: grilling aprons for my friend and me, and while sewing I have all the time in the world to let my mind wander. The obvious destination was the classic trope of the wife or girlfriend or mistress or whoever cooking in nothing but an apron. But instead I was internally laughing about dudes grilling in nothing ...
